Flying robots have transformed the future of technology developments worldwide. Flying robots commonly referred to as drones have a diverse range of purposes including social and commercial uses. Robots are machines that are programmed by a computer to operate complex actions automatically (Faust 3). Most people perceive robots as mechanical metal humans. However, robots also include complex machines that work in the factories (Oxlade 5).
The history of Robotics can be traced back to the development of the mechanical automaton. Automatons are machines that behave like animals and humans. The first automaton, a duck was created in 1739 by Jacques de Vucason. A famous watchmaker from Switzerland Jacquet Droz also build an automated doll in a bid to prove his expertise to the world. However, the word robot was invented by a story writer Karel Kapek In the 1920’s.His imaginative story of a scientist who created machines that moved like humans transformed the world to think about mechanical creatures (Oxlade 8).Robert the Robot another modern robot invention was created in the 1950’s.Isaac Asimov was the first to describe robotics by defining the three laws governing robotic behavior. According to Isaac, A robot may not harm humans, must obey orders and protect its own existence (Faust 4-5).The Universal automation was the first robot to be designed for commercial use for General Motors in 1958 .It was used for heated casting and by the end of the 1960’s it had been adopted by many factories globally.
Robots Today
Today’s robots are useful to accomplish tasks that human beings cannot. The android, build in 2003 resembles the human being with the skin and a face (Oxlade 27).Robots are used in the manufacturing sector especially automobiles and in medicine to conduct surgery procedures. Robotic automation is also useful for seas exploration and launching space missiles, since human beings may have problems accessing due to extreme environmental conditions. In 2000, the Honda robot ASIMO a humanoid design was developed in Japan .The first surgical application of robotic technology was used in 1985 to guide a needle into the brain. The use of Robotics has increased in medicine and is no longer experimental and is bound to be improved better quality care in the hospitals (Faust 11). Humanoid robots play an important role in the manufacturing sector as well as acting as service robots.
The Robo bee which designed under micro robotics with artificial muscles capable of flight, will be used achieve swarm intelligence and conduct artificial pollination and detect harmful chemicals. Small size robots advocate for the creation of artificial robot swarms, an interplay of sensing communication and computation. Commercially drones without GPS will be used to determine position using sensors, cameras and laser triangulation to assemble features into a picture. According to Kumar, the organizing principles of future flying robots include being aware of their neighbors and interacting within the environment to form shapes through coordination. Future robots can be used for agriculture, in the application of precision farming robots can identify diseases in individual plants and treat them. Furthermore, they can be used to count the number of trees in the orchard to optimize production chain, as well as combine visual and infra-red imagery to detect early onset of chlorosis on the leaves of plants.
Conclusion
In the future, Android will resemble humans completely, making it difficult to differentiate the two. Drones will be used to deliver goods and passengers. Social robots will mimic human forms and children will develop social relationships with the robots.
