Critique of Research Studies: ‘Students’ experiences of cooperation with nurse teacher during their clinical placements: An empirical study in a Western European context’
Results
Data analysis
The article states the aim of the research as “to explore pre-registration nursing students’ perceptions of co-operation with NTs during their clinical placements in nine Western European countries” (Saarikoski et al. 2012, p.2). However, the hypothesis of the study is not explicitly outlined. The methods of data analysis is clearly presented as using various approaches of the SPSS I5.0 tool. The rationale for the selected data analysis methods was also expressed for minimization of extraneous variables. Type I and Type II errors are not provided for as they are reduced to avoid bias.
Findings
The findings of the results were adequately presented using subheadings that ensured a chronological presentation of the study findings. The results of the country-specific frequencies and percentages from the statistical tests were tabulated for effective representation of research results, which ensures that sufficient information required for implementation of evidence based practice.
Discussion
Interpretation of the findings
The study findings were interpreted in the context of the current study’s conceptual framework and prior research. The study limitations are explored in terms of their influence on study results especially given that the sample size was small in some countries, hence limiting their generalization in such countries.
Implications/recommendations
The study clearly describes the study implications on practice while making recommendations for future research that would improve the findings and application of the research on evidence-based practice.
Global Issues
Presentation
The article is clearly written, well presented and coherent from the statement of the problem to the findings and conclusion. A CONSORT flow chart is not used for the description of study participants. The manner in which the findings are presented makes it easier for the audience to access the research findings based on subheading (Polit & Beck, 2006).
Researcher credibility
The research findings are enhanced by the clinical, substantive and methodological qualifications of the researchers. This is because they have the reliable and credible authority in this type of research and all of them have experience in the nursing field.
Summary assessment
Despite the limitations observed about the study sample, it is worth noting that the study results are valid and reliable in providing an actual value of the findings on students’ experiences in the context under investigation. This is because statistical tools were used for the analysis of the results and the findings interpreted in the context of prior studies to provide important insights into the nursing practice.
Critique of Research Study: ‘Perceptions of an older patient on the role of the family doctor in health promotion: a qualitative case study’
Results
Data analysis
The data analysis method is clearly presented in the article as the interview transcript was subjected to thematic analysis. The method of data analysis was consistent with the research tradition of the nature of qualitative research as thematic analysis allowed for all the themes from the interview to be analyzed and interpreted in the context of prior research. The data analysis procedures did not suggest the possibilities for bias.
Findings
The researchers effectively developed and summarized the findings in a chronological order in a way that allows readers to identify the important resulting themes (Polit & Beck, 2006). The themes, including patient’s perspective, physical activity, diet and stress and mental activity provide a glimpse of how the older patients wish to be treated by the primary doctors.
Theoretical integrations
All the themes resulting from the thematic analysis are logically linked to each other and successful connect to the goal of the article Polit and Beck (2006). The article does not use figures, models or maps for conceptualization, but the coherence and connectivity of the themes; physical activity, diet, stress and mental health, alcohol and tobacco, personal hygiene, health screening, prescription of medication and social activity conceptualize the perception of older patients regarding the role of family doctors in health promotion.
Discussion
Interpretation of the findings
The discussion of the findings reveals that the research findings are interpreted in the context of the prior research on the topic under investigation. The readers can connect the themes in the current research with those in previous studies. Nevertheless, the researcher did not provide for the study limitations. Given that the case study was selected after analysis of the theme, the study supports transferability of the findings.
Implications/recommendations
The study findings have outlined important implications of the study for clinical practice by recommending new perspectives into the issue of health promotion and patient involvement. As such, it is recommended that the family doctor also play the role of an educator and well as that of a health provider.
Global Issues
Presentation
The article in well organized and presented in a way that the reader is able to analyze and sufficiently derive important, rich information on the issue of patients’ perception of the role that family doctors should play in health promotion. All the sections in the paper are vividly presented with important descriptions from introduction to conclusions drawn.
Researcher credibility
The researcher’s credibility in enhanced by the fact that they are reputable authorities in the nursing field, playing the role of both practitioners and nursing educators, hence, they have adequate clinical, substantive, and methodological qualifications and experiences to provide important insights into the perception of older patients regarding the role of family doctors in health promotion.
We can do it today.
Summary assessment
This analysis shows that the study findings are trustworthy in instilling confidence in the truth value of the results (Polit & Beck, 2006). The use of thematic analysis in analyzing data allowed the research to deliver rich information on the topic, thereby contributing rich information on the nursing practice.
