The long-distance education has a positive impact as it has boosted education. Long distance education allows even the working class to attend classes and complete their school. It enables people to study at their own time. The flexible nature of the long-distance education allows even students that can’t access certain schools because they are located in far off places to get the chance to study. With the long-distance education, the older people that did not get the chance to finish school have been able to go back to school and study on their free time online. This explains why there has been an intense increase in the number of people graduation (Simonson, 2014). Also, the long distance education can accommodate virtually a large number of students doing a similar course. It, therefore, reduces the overcrowding of classes.

This kind of education system enables the students and instructors to access global resources as well as experts through the internet resources and internet communication. During the online discussion among the students that are in the long-distance education, the students get the privilege to hear diverse opinions from students in other geographical locations. This is beneficial to students as they get to know the perceptions of people from different parts of the world (Skrbiš, 2017). It is through platforms like these that there is sharing of culture and learning the culture of other people. This, therefore, shows that through the long distance education, exchange of cultures has been enhanced.

To some students, the long distance education has been the reason for their poor academic performance. As much as the long distance education has a positive effect to some students through the platforms that they offer to the students for research and its flexible nature, there are some students that the long distance education just dos do not work for them. This is because, in long-distance education, there is less or no one to one interaction between the teacher and the students. Teacher-student interaction is one important feature in any education system. It enables the students to get an in-depth analysis into some of the areas that they are facing difficulties in (Altbach, 2015). This is not possible in long distance education as the students don’t get to interact with the teacher. Through this, the performance of students may be bad based on the lack of platform where they can interact with the teachers and explain areas that they have challenges in. In the long-distance education, there is also lesser interaction between the students. The interaction between the students is a very important feature as students understand each other better and have ways of explaining tough areas among each other. This is something that is lacking in the long-distance education.

Creation of networks has also been minimized by the long distance education. In a normal education system, students get to meet physically, become friends with each other, which in future, they may turn to be business partners or couples. Physical schools have been one of the major social areas where people get to meet and know each other better. In long-distance education, the less interaction with other students blocks these platforms. It, therefore, becomes hard for online students to get to meet new people in their life that may become of great importance in the future days.

Conclusion

In conclusion, is evident that long-distance education is a common practice that is being embraced by people of all age groups across the globe. It has some merits and demerits. Some of the impacts of long-distance education are increased the performance of the aggressive students who wish to learn online, students being exposed to global educational resources across the internet and cultural exchange through the diverse opinions. However, it also has negative impacts such as lack of network creation among the students as they have less interaction. Also, the students don’t get the platform to have a close teacher to student interaction. This can be a cause of poor performance among other students in the long-distance education.
